The Networking Coffee Chat Playbook: How to Turn a 15-Minute Call Into a Job Referral
Updated: Sep 23
Let’s get one thing straight: a "quick networking coffee chat" is not a casual hangout. It is a stealth interview. If you are showing up to these 15-minute Zoom calls just to "see what happens" and ask basic questions, you are completely wasting your time—and theirs.

The goal of an informational interview isn't just to gather information; it is to build enough rapid trust that they willingly pass your resume to the hiring manager. You have a very short window to prove you are a high-value asset. Here is the actual tea on dominating the coffee chat and securing the referral:
The 80/20 Rule: You called the meeting, but they should be doing the majority of the talking. The fastest way to build rapport is to let people talk about their favorite subject: themselves. Keep your own elevator pitch to 60 seconds max. Your job is to guide the conversation with elite, hyper-specific questions, not to monologue about your career history.
Cancel the Basic Questions: If you ask a question that could have been answered by spending three minutes on their LinkedIn profile or the company’s "About Us" page, you instantly look unprepared. Ask high-mileage questions like: "What is a reality of your day-to-day role that completely surprised you when you first started?" or "If the team could only solve one major bottleneck this quarter, what would it be?"
The "Soft Pitch" Close: Never end the call by aggressively asking, "Can you get me a job?" Instead, make it frictionless and collaborative. Try the soft pitch: "I’m planning to formally apply for the open Project Manager role this week. Based on our chat, I’m confident my background in scaling digital infrastructure is a match. Do you have any advice on how to make my application stand out to the hiring team?" If they like your vibe, they will usually volunteer to refer you right then and there.
The 24-Hour Receipt: The follow-up email is non-negotiable. Send it within 24 hours. Do not just say "thanks for your time." Reference one specific thing they said, link an article relevant to your chat, and attach your perfectly formatted, modern resume so they have it on hand to forward.
